Environmental Bill of Rights & Natural Gas Drilling Ban – Campaign Launching

A group of local folks have just launched a petition drive to amend the State College home rule charter by ballot. Their goal is to get more than enough signatures to place the measure on the November ballot for a citizen vote.

Here’s the petition, including the proposed amendment: State College Environmental Bill of Rights Petition. Among other provisions, the amendment includes protections for our rights to clean water, clean air and sustainable energy.

For more information about municipal use of home rule provisions to protect communities, visit the Pennsylvania Home Rule page at the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund website.

CELDF is a non-profit, public interest law firm providing free and affordable legal services to communities facing threats to their local environment, local agriculture, the local economy, and quality of life.  Our mission is to build sustainable communities by assisting people to assert their right to local self-government and the rights of nature.

If you’d like more information or want to help gather signatures, contact campaign coordinator Braden Crooks at  (If you do collect petition signatures, make sure you get signatures from people who live within the borough’s boundaries. Here’s a map.)

Braden has also written a column about the campaign for the late June Sustainable Centre County page in the Centre Daily Times, which will be out next week.

The group will be hosting a campaign launch celebration on Saturday, July 2 in Central Parklet from 5 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., including speakers, live music and the debut performance of a play about environmental rights.
